HALOX® withstands Real World Exterior Exposure

Most protective coatings are qualified through accelerated tests which rarely relate to true atmospheric performance. Taking all of this into consideration, HALOX® put its very own calcium phosphosilicate corrosion inhibitor CW-491 to the test: A Real World Test! 
 

HALOX® CW-491 is an environmentally conscious phosphosilicate-based corrosion inhibitor designed for long-term corrosion
protection. It has been found to succeed versus heavy metal corrosion inhibitors when exposed to outdoor weather conditions. An industrial atmosphere contributes to and accelerates the corrosion process because of the many pollutants found on-site. In this case, sulfur and nitrogen oxides were present in the air. The pollutants combined with water and oxygen form rainwater with a pH below 5.7 – acid rain.

Once these acidic constituents penetrate through a coating and reach the metal surface, corrosion is increased. However, in the presence of the calcium phosphate dispersed into the coating, in this case an epoxy, the process is mitigated. As moisture penetrates the coating, the calcium ions precipitate to form insoluble hydroxides, in turn neutralizing the acids in the coating.
